Our Mission
Nuevos Horizontes de Starr County promotes independence and social integration for individuals with developmental disabilities by providing education, daily activities, advocacy, and community support in Rio Grande City, Texas.
Who We Are
Nuevos Horizontes de Starr County is a community-based nonprofit organization serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in Starr County. Led by Rosa Garcia, our organization was created to meet a local need for culturally responsive services, education, and safe daily programming.
Why We Exist
Across Texas, individuals from minority communities are less likely to receive the services and support they need. Families often face language barriers, lack of information, and limited access to culturally appropriate resources. In Starr County, these challenges are especially visible. Nuevos Horizontes exists to bridge these gaps and ensure families are informed, supported, and included.
What We Do
- Daily center activities that build life skills, confidence, and social interaction
- Monthly educational meetings to help families understand disability rights and services
- Community outings and events that promote awareness and inclusion
- Transportation and nutrition partnerships to support participant access and well-being
Our Impact
As a result of our work, parents have become more confident advocates in their children’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings. Families regularly refer others to our center, and community support has grown through event attendance and donations. Together, we are building understanding, inclusion, and opportunity.
